Miami Vice (1984)

Miami Vice was a popular and innovative television series starring Don Johnson (James "Sonny" Crockett) and Philip Michael Thomas (Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs) as two Miami police detectives working undercover. The storylines of the series differed from those of police shows from earlier decades, simultaneously reflecting the more glitzy and gritty feel of 1980s "New Wave" culture. As Crockett and Tubbs were vice cops, most episodes focused on drug trafficking and prostitution. Stories more often than not ended in a large gunbattle, usually costing the lives of several villains. Miami Vice also broke new ground in its treatment of crime and society. Complex themes of corruption, politics and abuses of power were often featured, and an undercurrent of cynicism and futility underlies the entire series.

The show had a huge influence on (men's) fashion at the time, popularizing, if not actually inventing, the "T-shirt under Armani jacket"-style. Crockett also boosted Ray Ban's popularity by wearing a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarer (Model L2052, Mock Tortoise). As a consultant to the show Gianni Versace provided the fashion sense. Pastel colors dominated the series in clothes as well as in architecture. Jodi Tillen was the costume designer for the first season, with Michael Mann setting the stylistic agenda. Crockett's perpetually unshaven appearance sparked a minor fashion trend, inspiring men to wear a small amount of beard stubble, also known as five o'clock shadow or "designer stubble", at all times.

MacGuyver (1985)

Angus MacGyver's main asset is his practical application of scientific knowledge and inventive use of common items—along with his ever-present Swiss Army knife and duct tape and the usual coincidence of being locked up in a room full of useful materials. The clever solutions MacGyver implemented to seemingly intractable problems—often in life-or-death situations requiring him to improvise complex devices in a matter of minutes—were a major attraction of the show, which was praised for generating interest in engineering as well as providing entertaining storylines.

All of MacGyver's exploits on the show were ostensibly vetted to be based on real scientific principles (even though, the creators acknowledged, in real life one would have to be extraordinarily lucky for most of MacGyver's ideas to succeed). In the few cases where MacGyver used household chemicals to create poisons, explosives or other things deemed too dangerous to be accurately described for public consumption, details were intentionally altered or vague.

The Equalizer (1985)

The series stars British actor Edward Woodward as Robert McCall, a former secret agent of an unnamed organization who tries to atone for past sins by offering, free of charge, his services as a troubleshooter (often literally), a protector, and an investigator. People in need find him through a newspaper ad: "Got a problem? Odds against you? Call the Equalizer." In the pilot episode (as he "opens for business"), we discover that the nickname "Equalizer" was bestowed on him by another operative, played by comedian Jerry Stiller.

Charles In Charge (1984)

Charles in Charge is a sitcom series which starred tv idol Scott Baio as Charles, a 19-year-old college student working as a family live-in babysitter.

Charles first worked for the Pembroke family: wife Jill, husband Stan, and their three children, Lila, Douglas and Jason. When the show ended its run and entered syndication in early 1987, the story was explained so that the Pembrokes moved away and the Powells moved into their house, allowing Charles to live downstairs yet again. This time the family consisted of grandfather Walter, mother Ellen (whose husband was in the military and could only visit his family sporadically), and her three kids, Jamie, Sarah and Adam.

The Greatest American Hero (1981)

Ralph Hinkley was a schoolteacher who dedicated his time to teaching difficult "special students". Heading back from a class field trip late one night, the school bus broke down. Ralph was forced to walk through the desert to seek help. He somehow stumbles upon a swerving car driven by a slightly inebriated Special FBI Agent Bill Maxwell, who was grieving the death of his partner. Ralph hitches a ride with Agent Maxwell but the car started acting strangely as the engine shuts down. The two are then blinded by bright lights shining above them, which to their surprise was coming from an alien spacecraft.

The aliens make contact via car radio, and instruct Ralph and Bill to work together in saving the world. Ralph is chosen to be given special powers that will aide his heroic deeds. A black case is handed to them which later Ralph opens to reveal a special bright red suit that gives him superpowers.

Fantasy Island (1978)

Airing from 1978 to 1984, the original series starred Ricardo Montalban as Mr. Roarke, the enigmatic overseer of a mysterious island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean (presumably near Hawaii), where people from all walks of life could come and live out their fantasies—for a price.

Roarke was known for his white suit and cultured demeanor, and was initially accompanied by an energetic sidekick, Tattoo, played by the diminutive Hervé Villechaize, who ran up the main bell tower to ring the bell and shout "The plane! The plane!" to announce the arrival of a new set of guests at the beginning of each episode.

V The TV Series (1983)

Aliens who appear human arrive on Earth in a fleet of 50 huge saucer-like motherships, which hover over key major cities. They appear to be friendly, seeking the help of humans to obtain chemicals needed to aid their ailing world. In return, the Visitors promise to share their advanced technology with humanity. The governments of Earth accept, and the Visitors gain considerable influence with authorities.

However, strange things are soon noted. Scientists find themselves facing increasing media hostility, and government restrictions on their activities and movements. Others, particularly those keen on examining the Visitors more closely, begin to disappear or face discredit. Noted scientists confess to subversive activities; some exhibiting other unusual behavior, such as suddenly demonstrating an opposite hand preference to the one they are known to have.

Journalist and TV cameraman Michael Donovan (Singer) sneaks aboard one of the Visitors' motherships and discovers that beneath their humanlike facade, the aliens are reptilian in nature, and carnivorous - preferring to eat live food, like rodents and birds. He learns from a Visitor named Martin that the story about the needed chemicals is merely a diversion. The true purpose of the Visitor's trip to Earth is to conquer and subdue the planet, steal all of the Earth's water and harvest the human race as food, leaving only a few as slaves and soldiers/cannon fodder for the Visitors' wars with other alien races.

Street Hawk (1985)

Street Hawk was a show about Jesse Mach, a police officer who was chosen to test a top secret vehicle project named "Street Hawk". His partner Norman Tuttle was responsible for the super bike's design, which he also built himself. Tuttle chose Mach as the only suitable candidate to ride Street Hawk, which Mach would use to fight crime. Many believe that the show came a bit too late. By 1985, most of the super vehicle themed television shows had already gone as tv shows were heading into a new direction. The show only lasted for 13 shows and was canceled then after.

Tangerine Dream composed the opening theme, and a modified version (which features in the pilot episode during the sequence where Jesse takes the bike out for the first time) appeared on their album "Le Parc", titled "LA - Streethawk".

Walt created a prototype Crime Computer that was hidden in a mummy case near an exhibit of legendary monsters Dracula, The Wolfman (Werewolf), and Frankenstein. When Walt turned on the machine he had created, "oscillating vibrations" brought life to the wax statues of Dracula, the Werewolf (who referred to himself in one episode as "Bruce W. Wolf," the "W" standing for "Were"), and Frankenstein (named "Frank N. Stien" as seen in the opening credits). These legendary monsters, right their pasts and became crimefighters who each used their special abilities and powers to defeat various supervillains.

The Six Million Dollar Man (1974)

The Six Million Dollar Man is a show that was based on the novel Cyborg by Martin Caidin, about the transformation of former astronaut Steve Austin into the first human cyborg, after being injured in a space program crash. The title of the show is credited to the fact that Austin's operation costs six million dollars. Both his legs, his right arm, and left eye are replaced with bionic (cybernetic) implants, which gives him abilities far above human normality. He is able to lift objects with super human strength, run with great speed, and telescopic vision. After his operatin, Austin goes to work for the OSI (Office of Scientific Intelligence) as a secret agent and as a test subject in bionic research. Due to the commercial success of the show, a spin-off was created in 1976 called The Bionic Woman.
