Octo-1 made me learn how my toys worked

I was watching that Voltes V episode where Little John's robot Octo-1 was introduced. When I was a kid, I really believed that a flying tentacled robot like Octo-1 could be made. I remember taking one of my robot toys apart and putting it back together, pretending that I actually made the robot myself. I think I was taking a lot of things apart at the time, which was quite fun because I learned a lot about how things worked.

Waiting for the school bus on a rainy day like this

It's been raining all day here in the big apple. It doesn't rain that much in New York City, so this is quite a refreshing treat. Reminds me of those rainy afternoons coming home from school, not wanting to do your home work cos you wanted to watch your favorite cartoons. Speaking of favorite cartoons, I hope you guys checked out that long lost animated gem King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table in this week's Cartoon TV Rama. Featuring that cartoon show brought back wonderful memories that I decided to write "Playing King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table", which I'm glad a lot of you enjoyed reading.

I was talking to my friend the other day, about how it was so much fun being a kid back in the day. Back then all you needed was your imagination! Do you remember the fun times you had with your playmates? What kind of make believe games did you play? I want to hear from you guys! Send me emails of little stories and anecdotes about your memories of playtime as a kid, and we'll feature it here at Nostalgia Manila. It's always fun to read about how other people used to play, the little treasures they kept, and relive that sense of wonder and pure innocence.

Our good friend Kuya Geezer sent me some amazing photos of La Salle Greenhills taken in the 70's! Wow, you should check them out, they really send you back in time. Which is why we both decided to come up with a new feature called Nostalgia Eskwela! I'm encouraging everyone to try and dig up photos of your old school and send them over so we can feature them.

So here I am looking out the window, staring at the gray skies above, looking at the people down below walking with their umbrellas over their heads. Though I'm physically here in this big city, my mind slowly drifts elsewhere. The smell of the rain has taken be back to when I was in 1st grade, sitting in the waiting shed, patiently waiting for my school bus to pick me up and take me home, where the promise of watching my favorite cartoons and meryenda awaits.

The magazine scan I featured for this week's "Seeing Stars" should excite all you Menudo fans out there! Man, they sure were in every music magazine back in 1985! I remember every time I'd go for a haircut at any salon, there would always be a stack of gossip and music magazines, and 95% of them would have Menudo on the cover. Remember all that?

Ok, so after watching the video of the CPDRC inmates of Cebu dance to the Rico Mambo a bazillion times, I've been trying to find out the name of the music group or artist that originally recorded that amazing 80's tune! I love Filmation cartoons!

Wow, I've been getting some real good emails today! I just got an email from a friend who works in the promotions industry, and he told me some pretty exciting news. He said that Filmation, the company that brought us some of the best 80's cartoons including Tarzan, The Super 7, Super Stretch & Micro Woman, and many more, are planning to release some of these amazing cartoons on DVD!!!! Well I don't want to be over excited just yet since it's still up in the air and in the planning stage, so we'll just have to cross our fingers and see!

My friend finds his old Daimos toy

Got an email from my friend in Manila who was lucky enough to find his old Daimos DX toy (now considered a highly priced vintage collectible) in his attic! It was missing a few of the small parts and weapons, like the small little plastic missiles, but Richard's little red car was still inside Daimos that was in Tranzer mode. Too bad he couldn't find the box. The toy's value would be much higher if he had the box. Still a great find!

Watching episodes of M.A.S.K.

I've been going through my collection of 80's cartoon DVDs I've acquired through Ebay, and I've been watching episodes of M.A.S.K. all day. Remember that cartoon? It was really cool when it first came out, and I remember really being into the toys. These DVDs aren't such good quality since the masters are copied from VHS tapes, but somehow the quality injects a bit more nostalgia as it reminds me of trying to tape my favorite shows on Betamax. Oh Betamax.

Pasalubong? White King Champurado

I had something this morning that I haven't had in years! My aunt brought me a nice box of White King brand Champurado mix, and it sure brought back a lot of memories! I used to have that for merienda (afternoon snack) every single day growing up, right in between playing with my neighborhood playmates. It's best eating a hot bowl of Champurado on a rainy day. Ah... Champurado!

I used to love watching Tarzan cartoons!

Did you guys check out that Tarzan cartoon I just posted? That's the first one of many complete Tarzan (Lord Of The Jungle) cartoons that I'll be featuring here at Nostalgia Manila! Made by Filmation in the 70's, we all used to watch these on IBC channel 13. This was one of my favorite cartoons when I was a kid. I really loved the animation quality, and the story lines are quite exciting even when I watch them now. More cartoons to come!

Tears For Fears Croc or Gator?

Ok so I'm real confused! I've had 4 people email me telling me that the reptile in the "Pale Shelter" video is a crocodile, BUT I've also had 4 other people here at the cafe tell me it's an alligator. I really don't know what to think... I've been checking out online encyclopedias to see if I can compare the two and see which one is the closest to the reptile in the video. I'm guessing it is a croc, but that's just my guess.

Listening to my Tears For Fears records

I'm currently listening to my entire collection of Tears For Fears records. Yes, yes, yes, I do have a record player and I still think there's no substitute for vinyl! "Pale Shelter" just came on. I've always loved that video, especially with the girl in the swimming pool and that big croc (or was it a gator?) comes in. Now that's got me thinking... was it a croc or a gator?! My classmate brought a new Thundercats toy to school every week

Did you guys see the latest Thundercats episode I just posted? Man that really brings me back to my elementary school days! I remember watching this particular episode, going to school the next day, and talking about it with all my classmates. I had this classmate who was the envy of every kid in class, cos he had a new Thundercats toy every week! The guy was obviously spoiled by his rich parents. But the cool thing back then is we had what we called "overnight" or "pa-overnight", in which we swapped toys for the night. Was really cool cos you got to play with some toys you never had. I never had one Thudercats toy!

Bootleg Thundercats action figures

I'm watching the latest Thundercats episode I just posted. Wow, this episode really brings me back! I'm sure a lot of you guys out there collected Thundercats toys. I remember the toy vendor outside our school sold these bootleg Thundercats action figures. They were made of cheap plastic and were very light. Surprisingly, they closely resembled the real thing as if they were made using the original molds. I remember eating Thundercats cheese snacks which I would buy from the corner store right by our old house. Ok! Time to finish watching this episode!

Watching stuff on Ebay

I woke up early this morning to check out some things I've been watching on Ebay. I'm checking out these really cool pair of vintage Adidas trainers, and this really amazing pair of vintage Levi's 684 flare jeans that has somehow been listed badly so no one has been bidding! It's great to have a bit of knowledge about vintage clothing especially when you can pick something up on Ebay for really cheap and resell it for a bigger profit! ;) Ok got to go and check out the bids!

Why did the change the box of Jack N' Jill Chocolate Pretzels?!

I'm up pretty late I know, but I'm not really sleepy just yet. I was real happy earlier when my cousin brought over a box of Jack N' Jill Chocolate Pretzels. I haven't had those in a long time, and I must say I'm not too happy about the new packaging. I really wished they stuck to the classic box with classic fonts! I'm real disappointed.
