The 2007 Philippine Blog Awards

On behalf of the Nostalgia Manila Community, I'd like to thank our very good friend JJ Junio who was so kind to act as Nostalgia Manila's official Manila correspondent and representative at the 2007 Philippine Blog Awards. JJ wasn't feeling so well but he still went on to represent Nostalgia Manila with such pride and gusto. He took some cool photos, and you can see Nostalgia Manila up on the big screen.

Nicholas Stoodley - Living in the Twilight Zone Chapter 8

Tune in every Saturday as Nicholas recalls the Disco Decade in Manila when Martial Law, Cuban heels, Donna Summer, Coco Banana and a lot of hair combined in a frenzy of uncertain excitement.

Chapter 8 - Coco Banana

Let it be Magic.....and it was. It was the time of Donna Summer who, in so many ways, created the spell that was the Disco Decade. That was the time of Coco Banana, the offspring of Ernest Santiago who had a talent for self-promotion and wore a satisfied smile that always reminded me of the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland. And why shouldn't he have been smiling! They lined up to be admitted to the magic. In droves.

Perhaps some of them had found their way to Coco Banana by way of the mini forest that used to stand in the middle of Remedios Circle in Malate where on a Saturday night you could smell the clouds of illegal smoke as it slowly wended its way up into the atmosphere in a haze of its own particular magic. In those days the yuppies didn't go to Malate - that was out of bounds. But Sean Connery came. Lots of famous foreigners were there but in those heady, glorious, riotous days Coco Banana was almost the center of the Universe!

Tucked away in a dimly lit side street just off Remedious Circlem, the club somehow managed to attract the most amazingly eclectic mixture of people that could be imagined. Sure there were the sex tourists from Europe who were only just becoming Euro Trash but then they were fanning out allover the East in their quest for cheap thrills. But actually nobody gave a damn and that was what disco was all about. It was a great leveller where we all merged into a homogeneous melange of interweaving bodies, sweat and the general Ecstasy of freedom that flowed despite the castration of the system wrought upon the country by its government!

Socialites and Movie Stars writhed with hookers and call boys and fashion models. Cross dressers slunk around eyeing up the competition and even the odd politician showed up anxious not to be left out. And through it all Donna Summer oozed an almost sacred grail. She WAS disco. The heart. The soul.

It was at Coco Banana when I first realized that Nicholas Stoodley, as a brand, had "made it" in the Philippines. I had drifted in at midnight since just NOBODY really went there before except perhaps the sex tourists from Europe, and there I was confronted by at least 15 people wearing my signature across their chests. A strange feeling. They had no idea it was ME as I squeezed through them, but there I was. Sort of famous. In many ways it meant a lot more than winning the PBA at the Araneta Collesium. Of course the majority of those that cavorted my name across the floor were call boys but then I guess I could claim that I was master of street fashion!

Manila had always, up to that point in time, been very self-conscious socially. I mean one just didn't cross social boundaries. One would never, darling, go to a club with hookers and call boys and yet here they were. The genuine Makati socialites not giving a damn, cheek by jowl with, for all it was known, their drivers. Look around the room and you saw fame and wealth and poverty together and having FUN. Simple as that. Not like the Embassy in the Fort today where it is necessary to be a friend of Tim Yap or famous or beautiful and rich to even survive a few minutes before being swept into a corner!

Coco we miss you.

Nicholas Stoodley was born near London and has lived at one time or another in the South of France, Rome, Sydney, Tagaytay, England, Paris and Manila with plans to move to Ibiza shortly. A former assistant to Valentino in Rome, he arrived in Manila in 1976 and pioneered Ready to Wear in the Philippines with the NICHOLAS STOODLEY brand of casual clothing. During his stay in the Philippines Nicholas also won the PBA Invitational Basketball Conference in 1980 with his team from Los Angeles, designed and manufactured a Stainless Steel Sports Utility Jeep that was featured in the Frankfurt Motor Show and opened "Skatetown", a Roller Disco with Jorge Araneta in Cubao. And that was just the first course!

Ang totoo ay kasama iyon sa visual concept ng video. Sinadyang mag mukhang cartoons ang grupo, at shinoot ang video sa puting background na may mga rolling shots. The Six Million Dollar Man (1974)

The Six Million Dollar Man is a show that was based on the novel Cyborg by Martin Caidin, about the transformation of former astronaut Steve Austin into the first human cyborg, after being injured in a space program crash. The title of the show is credited to the fact that Austin's operation costs six million dollars. Both his legs, his right arm, and left eye are replaced with bionic (cybernetic) implants, which gives him abilities far above human normality. He is able to lift objects with super human strength, run with great speed, and telescopic vision. After his operatin, Austin goes to work for the OSI (Office of Scientific Intelligence) as a secret agent and as a test subject in bionic research. Due to the commercial success of the show, a spin-off was created in 1976 called The Bionic Woman.

1. Where did you grow up, and what made that place special?
I have spent most of my life in Manila and I wouldn't have chosen anywhere else to live. What makes it so special is that it has lots of character. I was able to explore so many places with so much history and meet interesting people while growing up that I thought everyone else must have a similar experience. It was only when I swapped stories with friends and classmates that I got to realize how truly lucky I was. I can still remember walking along sun-dappled, tree-lined streets of Manila with the carelessness of youth. Back then, it wasn't as scary to go out and make friends with the neighborhood kids. I was also fortunate to have experienced buying candy (Tootsie Roll, Lips Candy, Orange Swits, Bazooza Joe and Tarzan bubble gum, Pop Rocks) from the motherly owner of the nearby sari-sari store whom we all fondly called Aling Rosa...

2. What was your favorite tv show, cartoon, or children's show growing up? What did you like about these shows that made them your favorite?
Oh my! I am proud to say that I am what you'd call a Sesame Street kid. I was hooked on SS (before it was translated into Filipino), Electric Company and Saturday Fun Machine (from Super Friends, Great Space Coaster, Sigmund and the Sea Monster, Archie, Yogi Bear, Wacky Races). I also loved Voltes V, Daimos, Mekanda Robot, Mazinger Z, Voltron, Candy-Candy, Ron-Ron, Thundercats, Carebears, Smurfs and Gummi Bears. Of course, who'd ever forget Charlie's Angels, Wonder Woman, Little House on the Prairie, Love Boat, A.L.F., Perfect Strangers, Falcon Crest, Dynasty, Flamingo Road, Dallas, Knots Landing, Remington Steele, Three's Company, Different Strokes, Facts of Life, The Cosby Show and Battle of the Network Stars. On the local front, I enjoyed watching Champoy, T.O.D.A.S., Iskul Bukol, Chicks to Chicks and yes, even (the often ridiculed, and considered super cheesy) See-True, GMA Supershow, Big Ike's Happening and That's Entertainment. Hahaha! I also liked to catch up on all the old Sampaguita flicks being showcased by Channel 9 in the afternoons. That's where I got introduced to Jose Mari Gonzales, Susan Roces, Rosemarie Sonora, Eddie Gutierrez, Liberty Ilagan, Barbara Perez and the rail-thin but already funny Dolphy. And remember FEN station being broadcast from the US Naval base in Subic? That was a guilty pleasure for me too. So sue me - they helped make me a more rounded individual. Kids nowadays are being fed the most inane shows. I mean, Teletubbies and Barney, for pete's sake! Plus all these telenovelas (Pinoy, Spanish, Chinese and Korean) proliferating the airwaves. Ay caramba!

3. Favorite music group or artist? Most memorable song?
For some strange, inexplicable reason, my parents almost always made me sing along to Sharon Cuneta songs so I know almost all her old songs like Dear Heart, High School, Forgive and Forget, Cross My Heart, etc...

4. Share with our readers one of your fondest memories of growing up.
Am proud to say that I was my lola's favorite apo. Each evening, without fail, she would take me along and ask the driver to bring us to the CCP Complex along Roxas Boulevard just so I could eat my favorite siopao asado being served by the deaf-mute canteen there. Then we'd sit near the breakwater and watch the waves crash against the seawall. The air was fresh and invigorating and you could still see the myriads of tiny fish in the clear waters of Manila Bay. Other times, she'd take me to my second home, Bookmark bookstore in Ermita so she could buy me a Nancy Drew book to add to my collection. Then we'd walk next door to the Spanish restaurant (the name of which escapes me now) so we could savor the most delicious churros con chocolate ever made.

I also reminisce about those Sunday afternoons spent with the fam eating in Shakey's Malate (before it gained notoriety for its drunken brawls) after mass in nearby Malate Church. Back then, it was THE best pizza parlor. Sometimes, we'd walk across to Aristocrat Restaurant to have dinner then I'd order pistacchio with bubblegum ice cream from Coney Island right beside it.

5. What do you miss from back then that's not available today?
Places: Tom Sawyer's Fried Chicken (Greenhills), Coney Island ice cream, Selecta Dairy House, Rustan's San Marcelino, Bungalow Restaurant, Fiesta Carnival.

Stuff: Kung-fu shoes, chinese jackstones, LPs played on turntables, cassette tapes, hand-written, pages-long letters lovingly sent by friends! :)

177. Naghahagilap kayo ng "underground media newspapers" para maka-hagilap pa ng balita tungkol sa Ninoy Aquino Assasination Investigation.

I was contacted by one of the organizers for the 2007 Philippine Blog Awards, asking for my information relating to my attendance. As you all know, I am based in NYC and will not be able to attend. Another reason that's quite obvious to all of Nostalgia Manila's fans and devoted readers, is the fact that I've always kept my identity secret. I've always stressed in every interview that Nostalgia Manila is about the people as a whole, and I would not want it focused on the individual who simply publishes it.

The organizers would like someone to attend the awards night on behalf of Nostalgia Manila; just in case Nostalgia Manila wins the award for Best Fashion & Lifestyle Blog.
